Intel Iris Xe Max Discrete GPU Announces AI, Encoding Performance Boost for Slim Laptops

In a surprise announcement, Intel has also revealed how laptops can use integrated and discrete GPUs simultaneously to increase graphics performance and speed up certain types of compute-intensive or AI-based tasks.

The Iris Xe Max GPU has 96 executive units, similar to the top-end integrated implementation, but has a maximum clock speed of 1.65GHz. It leverages Intel’s 10nm Superfin Transistor technology. It can take advantage of PCIe 4.0 speed to connect to the CPU, and has 4GB LPDDR4X memory with a bandwidth of 68GB. Up to four displays can be run simultaneously on HDMI 2.0B, DisplayPort 1.4 or internal EDP. Variable rate shading and adaptive sync are supported.

In terms of gaming performance, the Iris X Max is positioned against Nvidia’s GeForce MX350 entry-level discrete GPU, so you can expect to play relatively modern games at 1080p to medium levels with frame rates above 30.

Acer, Asus and Dell have simultaneously unveiled the first laptops featuring the Iris X Max GPU. The Acer Swift 3X, Asus VivoBook TP470, and Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 will all go on sale in parts of the world in November.
